Project Mainstream

Since 1994 Project Mainstream focuses with an objective in providing vocational and small business training to the underprivileged street and slum youth (age group 18 to 25 years) in Mumbai.

These youth are mostly runaways from other cities who come to Mumbai to pursue a career, are then misled in a direction unknown to them and are doomed.  Some may have family connections but others are simply abandoned or choose to run away from home, often due to domestic violence.

They are everywhere but invisible, toiling for long hours with minimal pay or unpaid dues making them vulnerable to exploitation and abuse.  Millions of others work under horrible circumstances which is a persuasive problem throughout the world especially in developing countries.  Many of these youth endure lives of pure deprivation.

Technical guidance is provided to choose suitable career path to these youth by identifying their hidden talents and interests.

Project Mainstream plays a vital role in the development of skills of these undeserved youth along with various Training Institutions, NGOs, Skills, Expertise, Trainers and Teachers so that they should not suffer any discrimination in access to learning opportunities.

 Objectives

The success of Project Mainstream has been in training more than 56,000 youth upto year ending March 2011, who benefited and were trained in various skills.  Our target is to strengthen the knowledge and training to these underprivileged youth with careers suitable to them by identifying their talents and interests.

 Project Mainstream Provides

  • An opportunity to the underprivileged youth to blossom into young motivated individuals who can steer their lives more successfully as adults.
  • Not only vocational and small business training but also other platforms to support these young youth so that they can stand on their own feet.

  • Assists in the formation of self-help groups for young women and educate them on how to better plan / manage finances and improve their credit worthiness.
  • The training programs are for underprivileged youth both male and female from the age group of 18 to 25 years.
  • After completion of the training program each beneficiary is honored with a certificate.
  • It aims at providing training to these youth without abruptly alienating them from their environment.
