26th November 2008 was indeed a Black Wednesday for Mumbai. A team of 10 highly motivated, rather brain washed, more than adequately armed terrorists entered through the sea route and created havoc at some of the landmark locations of this metropolis. After 60 hours of mind chilling violence and mayhem the Indian Army commandos killed 9 and arrested 1.

But now what-the tragedy has left hundreds dead and injured some grievously who might never be able to lead normal lives again. It was the evening/night of a working day and most of those dead or injured are bread winners of the poor and middle class families of Mumbai. They have left behind sorrowing families with children who might never be children again-how will they continue their studies, how will they be able to lead their lives without parental support.

It is here that we can help.

Ratna Nidhi Charitable Trust with its vast experience in post disaster relief would like to offer a helping hand to such children and youth and assist in their education, upbringing and other needs. What they have lost can never be compensated for but let us at least try and give them a better tomorrow.

Ratna Nidhi Charitable Trust has a vast experience in post disaster rehabilitation projects notably:

  • Assistance to the Gujarat earthquake victims in 2001
  • Rehabilitation of the tsunami victims of South India in 2004
  • Educational scholarships to children of the Mumbai Bomb Blast victims
  • Relief provided for the Mumbai flood victims in 2005
  • 17000 kits given to children affected by the floods in Surat
  • Hygiene and Survivor kits for the Bihar flood victims 2008
  • Hygiene and Educational kits for children affected by the Nargis cyclone in Myanmar-the list goes on and on.

Ratna Nidhi Charitable Trust needs your support. The present project would provide support for education of the victims children as well as any other emergency needs.

The beneficiaries have been identified and selected from the list of the dead and injured as collected by us from Police Stations, Hospitals and State Government records.

A special team has visited the families of the dead and injured and identified potential beneficiaries. This would be a 3 to 5 year project and the children helped would be monitored regularly to assess their progress and the project impact.

An update

A total of 158 children have been selected for providing educational scholarships.

The project has received support from Omidyar Network U.S.A. through Give India, Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, State Bank of India, Ratna Global Foundation U.S.A. and others.

The cheques for the first year were distributed recently and would go a long way in providing Educational support to these children.

We thank our supporters who shall be receiving regular updates on the beneficiaries.
