Children of
economically deprived groups normally dropout
of education to help their parents to chip into
the family income. To give an incentive to these
children to regularly attend their classes and
to reduce the burden of family to feed one mouth,
this program has been launched in many poor
balwadis (nurseries), and schools in Mumbai
and has resulted in retaining students longer
in the education system as well as making them
more active and attentive in classes and interested
in regular attendance. |
This scheme
was initiated taking into consideration the
fact that a major chunk of earnings of street
children is spent on buying unhggienically unhygienic
cooked and dispensed food from the roadside
vendors which leaves them malnourished, sick,
and underdeveloped physically. These street
children, who earn well and can buy food, do
not do so out of habit. Instead, they squander
away the money in entertainment and other vices
as they are not sure of the security of their
savings.
RNCT therefore came up with this ‘Food
for Saving Programme’. Through this programme
Street children are provided ready-to-consume
food packets in lieu of some amount which they
save for future use. This amount is deposited
in a Bank in their account which multiplies
over a period of time & can then be used
for a micro-business or some family/social needs.
