The Gujarat
Earthquake on 26th January 2001 left over 60,000
people dead and over 150,000 disabled. A massive
worldwide relief program was begun in order
to help those who have suffered and lost everything
in the earthquake.
RNCT coordinated the sponsorship efforts of
various international and local organizations
and held a 10 day ‘Hospital on Wheels’
project at Surendranagar. The purpose of this
project was to provide medical and surgical
treatment to the quake-affected people.
Two coaches rented from the Indian Railways
were converted into mini-hospitals. In these
Jaipur foot and callipers were fitted to the
handicapped victims of the natural disaster
in the coach itself. At the same time wheel-chairs,
tri-cycles, crutches, and garments were distributed
to those in need. Also surgeries were carried
out in several fields including, orthopaedic,
polio corrective, and eye surgeries.
From 10th February 2002 to 20th February 2002
a total of 631 people were benefited from this
camp.
